Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

MEM24020 - Apply materials technology principles to non-destructive tests

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Apply general principles of non-destructive testing to materials and products

  1. Check that specified non-destructive testing method, access and set-up requirements will leave material and product usable after NDT
  2. Review general principles of calibration and uncertainty of measurement for implications for NDT request
  3. Identify safety and environmental considerations of test methods
  4. Comply with work health and safety requirements (WHS)

Review the properties of products and materials specified for non-destructive testing

  1. Identify provided materials and products for consistency with specifications
  2. Review material physical and mechanical properties and identify properties relevant to specified NDT
  3. Review the implications of the manufacturing processes and use and operating conditions of provided products for NDT strategy

Determine test strategy and techniques for a product

  1. Apply knowledge of material and product properties to predict the most likely failure modes, discontinuities and defects present and their significance
  2. Identify an appropriate test strategy from standards, codes and standard operating procedures
  3. Select appropriate test techniques to provide reliable data to confirm product integrity or detect degradation
  4. Report findings including the methodology used and the advantages and limitations of the recommended test strategy and techniques.
